Introduction
The workshop is organized to exchange information and to discuss on various related matters concerning microbial genetic resources and their effective uses. The workshop will be composed of three parts; key note lectures, presentations by Asian delegates and a panel discussion.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the workshop are to share experiences and exchange opinions about research and development for effective and sustainable use of microbial genetic resources, and to discuss how to cooperate further in exploring useful resources in Southeast and East Asian countries.
|
Outline of the Workshop
1) Presentations by Asian Delegates
The presentations will cover the following points:
- What are the characteristic features of the microbial resources of each Asian country and how and to what extent is scientific analysis for their sustainable use being carried out or planned?
- The problems with which each country is facing in performing the scientific research mentioned above.
- What sort of roles could NITE possibly play in collaboration with each
country for further exploration of the microbial resources?
2) Panel Discussion
The title will be "How could we successfully collaborate with each
other to explore microbial genetic resources for the common benefit of
mankind?", which will cover:
- Within the framework of CBD, what sort of measures should we take to establish a collaborative research system that is flexible enough to ensure the independence of scientists in performing their research activities?
- What sort of benefits would possibly be expected from the collaborative work and how should we deal with them?
- What should we consider beforehand to solve any problems and/or conflicts
arising during the collaborative work?
Working Language
The working language of the meeting will be English.
How to participate?
Registration (free) is required to participate in the workshop. For details,
see below.
Proceeding of the conference
A proceeding of the meeting will be published within a few weeks after
the conference. It will include summary of the presentation of each Asian
delegate and an outline of the discussion and exchange of opinions.
