NITE is continuing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the Project
Agreement (PA) with some Asian countries such as Indonesia, Mongolia and
Vietnam, in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The objective of our collaboration is to conduct research and development
for the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources in Asian
countries for academic, industrial and other purposes, leading to their
utilization and commercialization.
NITE collaborates with domestic researchers to collect, isolate and characterize
microorganisms in their countries. NITE would provide technical transfer,
sharing of research and development results, and capacity building to develop
the microbiology and to encourage the utilization of microorganisms in
Asian countries.

 |
In March 2006, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that replaces the previous MOU on Joint Research Program for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Microbial Resources was signed by the representatives of NITE and the State Ministry for Research & Technology (RISTEK) of the Republic of Indonesia. The new MOU became effective on 1 April 2006. Based on the new MOU, an amended Project Agreement (PA) was agreed to be implemented by NITE and research groups mainly from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).

Inauguration of Asian Consortium (ACM) |
 |
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
In March 2004, NITE-DOB organized an Asian experts' meeting to discuss
the conservation and exploitation of microbial genetic resources in Asian
countries rich in biological diversity. Consequently, formation of an organization
termed gAsian Consortium for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Microbial
Resources (ACM)h was agreed by the attendants to collaborate on human
resource development, promotion of research, formation of a BRC network,
appeal to individual governments, etc..
To inaugurate ACM, the first general assembly meeting of 12 Asian members
was held in October 2004 in Tsukuba, in which collaborative activities
for the exploration and utilization of microbial genetic resources were
discussed and two task forces on ehuman resource developmentf and eBRC
network formationf, were established.
