Exploitation of hitherto unknown microorganisms
The number of microorganisms identified by human to date is extremely small compared to the entire species of microorganisms living on earth. Hitherto unidentified microorganisms may possess potential usefulness towards human life and/or industrial applications. Thermophiles isolated from extreme environments and symbionts isolated from plants and animals are expected, respectively, to be applied for thermostable enzyme production and for environmental control.
At the Biotechnology Development Center, industrially useful microbial resources are explored, isolated, identified, collected and preserved, and a library with various types of useful information added is being constructed. Furthermore, to maintain and enhance the quality of the collection, techniques for preventing functional deterioration of biological resources for their long-term preservation as well as methods for direct cloning of genes from special environments are being developed.

Projects for promoting industrial utilization of biological resources
To enhance research activities to realize industrial uses of useful biological functions, DOB stimulates utilization of the genetic resources and related information it possesses in collaborative research projects between industry, academia and government. DOB also constructs databases, enabling search and acquisition of information necessary for industrial utilization of biological resources. Such collaborative research projects between industry, academia and government aim not only at the promotion of research and development in the biotechnology field but also at the development of applications of genetic resources.

Establishing good relationship with Asian nations
Based on the Convention on Biological Diversity, NITE has concluded Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) and Project Agreements (PA) with the three Asian countries listed below for the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources in these countries. Along this line NBDC has started exploration of microbial resources at selected sampling sites to promote collaborative research for their efficient use in industrial and academic sectors.
