Genomic data of various microorganisms and newly identified biological functions are progressively exploited in various industrial sectors from which several new techniques have emerged. The government has been enthusiastically pushing forward various policies in which biotechnology is placed as the strategic technology of prime importance of the 21st century.
To promote industrial utilization of biotechnological achievements further,
it will be necessary to collect information concerning the functions of
genes and their protein products and to stimulate development of techniques
necessary to pursue their biological roles. At the same time, it will also
be necessary to promote various types of investigations, in particular,
those bridging basic and applied fields, to increase the industrial usefulness
of the data obtained. Such efforts inevitably require systematic collection
of useful biological resources isolated from the nature, along with relevant
information concerning them. NITE has organized Department of Biotechnology
with four divisions to enhance expertise in biotechnology and to maximally
utilize various functions possessed by diverse microorganisms through their
active cooperation. I would like to ask your understanding and further
support of the departments activities.
