Various inventions have been made with microorganisms since ancient times. Because to patent such inventions has become a key to modern industrial development, the NITE Patent Microorganisms Depositary (NPMD) was established in 2004 in accordance with the patent depository system to securely protect depositors' intellectual properties through long term preservation and distribution of patent microorganisms.

Use of patent microorganisms after expiration of the depository terms |

 |
 |
As a patent depository organization established next to NBRC, NPMD will transfer useful patent microorganisms whose depository terms have expired to NBRC, if agreed by depositors, for preservation and general distribution to exploit their functions further. |

By using services such as L-drying sample preparation provided by NBRC, NPMD has realized efficient patent depository.
Outline of the depository system of patent microorganisms

Application for a patent including a microorganism(s) is required to deposit the microorganism(s) to a depository organization designated by the Industrial Property Office.
The purpose of this system is for the depository organization to guarantee the existence of the microorganism(s) and the reproducibility of the patented invention by distributing the microorganism(s).
